Is it best to take melatonin every day or can someone take it on and off?

Dear Joan,
You have the best results if you take melatonin every day. Every night the pineal gland should produce melatonin and give us restorative sleep. Growing older, this doens't happen anymore and the gland produces less and less melatonin because of a sclerosis of the very same pineal gland. This is why elderly people sleep worse or less. So if you take melatonin only every now and then, the body can't respond properly to this stimulus and gets "confused". In general the reaction to melatonin is very individual and you should try out by yourself how you feel taking it.
