Every day our organism produces melatonin, which is a substance secreted by the epiphysis (pineal gland) and regulates the sleep-awake cycle.

The main melatonin characteristic is that it is synthesized in the dark, reaching its peak between 2 and 4 am: then its effects gradually decrease with the arrival of the day and the light. But not always everything work as it should.

Benefits against the ageing and menopause: melatonin could also give benefits against ageing, in fact it is also called "the hormone of youth". The pineal gland, which produces melatonin, worth the passing of years produces less and less of it: according to doctor Walter Paoli, an Italian doctor who have been studying the effects of melatonin on the human organism for many years, giving the right dose of this substance as a supplement in the period of some months, could help the gland resting, maintaining in this way the energies to regulate the hormonal system.

Melatonin increases the immunity defenses too and it could be useful in the prevention of tumors too: melatonin can be used as an immunomodulatory as it helps increasing the immunity defenses of the organism. During the last years many medical studies have shown that melatonin can make some cancerogenic cells die in some kind of tumors as the breast and prostate ones.
